Frenchie Gives Back: Emma Loves Dogs

Welcome back, Frenchie family!

As we get 2021 into full swing, we're delighted to introduce our January charity to the Frenchie community! This month, we're proud to sponsor the Emma Loves Dogs Foundation, a charity that provides financial assistance to organizations that share a passion for helping animals, such as police K9 units and non-kill animal shelters.

Founded in honor of Emma Mertens, Emma Loves Dogs honors Emma's spirit and love of animals -- particularly, dogs -- by connecting animal-loving organizations with the resources they need to transform lives, both human and canine.  

Emma Mertens was an 8-year-old girl from Hartland, Wisconsin. In early 2019, Emma was diagnosed with a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) brain tumor, but she didn't let it stand in her way. Emma spent the remainder of 2019 helping others, and asked friends, family members, and her supporters online to make donations to local animal shelters in lieu of gifts on her birthday.

Among this spectacular kid's accomplishments, she was awarded the Humane Animal Welfare Society's Youth Community Kindness Award for her contributions to the Humane Society, and was made an honorary member of the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Canine Handlers Association. 

In honor of Emma's 8th birthday, the Mertens family founded the Emma Loves Dogs Foundation, which carries on Emma's mission of helping animals in her memory today. 

Emma passed away on November 17th, 2019, but her family continues to honor her memory through the Emma Loves Dogs Foundation. In its first year, the Foundation awarded more than $90,000 to 29 animal shelters and 13 police K9 units. 

Today, the Mertens family and the Emma Loves Dogs Foundation support police K9 units, non-kill animal shelters, and other animal-focused organizations around the country. Frenchie Bulldog Pet Supply is proud to make our own contribution in Emma's memory, and help carry on her mission together.
